There is something undeniably poetic about a tall ship receiving a new set of sails. It’s more than just a maintenance update; it’s a renewal of spirit. We are thrilled to announce that the Mystic Whaler has officially been outfitted with a brand-new suit of sails, custom-crafted to carry her through her next chapter of maritime education and adventure.

When it came time to choose a sailmaker, we looked to the rugged coast of Maine. The new sails were designed and hand-finished by the experts at Traditional Rigging Co. in Appleton, ME.

Known for their meticulous attention to historical detail and structural integrity, the team in Appleton understands that sails for a schooner like the Whaler aren't just fabric—they are engines. Every seam, bolt rope, and grommet was crafted with the precision required to handle the unpredictable moods of the sea.

While the craftsmanship is traditional, the material is cutting-edge. These sails are made from Oceanus fabric, a specialized sailcloth that offers the best of both worlds:

  • The Look of Classic Canvas: Oceanus possesses a beautiful off-white aesthetic that honors the golden age of sail.

  • Modern Durability: Unlike the heavy, water-absorbing cotton canvas of the 19th century, Oceanus is a high-tenacity polyester. It is significantly lighter, more resistant to UV damage, and, most importantly, it doesn't stretch or rot.

  • Performance: Because the fabric holds its shape so well, the Mystic Whaler will sail closer to the wind and respond more efficiently to the helm.

For those who step aboard the Mystic Whaler, these sails represent our commitment to safety and excellence. Whether we are teaching students the physics of lift or simply sailing along the coastline at sunset, these sails ensure the ship performs at her absolute peak.

With her new sails, the Mystic Whaler is definitely not staying in port. We can’t wait to see you on deck to feel the pull of the new canvas for yourself.

The Process:

The sails are cut at a local elementary school gym, then built at the Traditional Rigging Co. shop. (They will not be entirely spread out again until they are bent on the ship.)
