The Mission of Mystic Whaler is to promote hands-on education, STEAM academic comprehension, environmental stewardship, teamwork, self-confidence, and nautical skills with a special focus on youth through sailing and the sea.

Roger and Sarah Chrisman purchased Mystic Whaler and founded Mystic Ocean Adventures in 2021, acting on the long-standing belief that the Santa Barbara Channel- and its ocean, islands, and coastline- are educational treasures that everyone should benefit from.

The organization’s flagship resource, the 110-ft schooner Mystic Whaler, is the perfect medium for exploring adventure-inspired learning through sailing and the sea. Mystic Whaler's hands-on, activity-based programs develop and strengthen STEAM academic comprehension, social/emotional maturity, environmental stewardship, nautical skills, and historical lessons. Mystic Whaler is committed to making engaging experiential education and the Santa Barbara Channel more accessible to the communities of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Mystic Whaler works with communities to provide programs relevant to their needs. It offers educational programs year-round.

Mystic Whaler provides financial assistance for access to programs based on needs through funding from private foundations, corporate and government grants, individual donations, and fundraising program revenue. Mystic Whaler is also available for privately sponsored fundraising events, corporate team-building, and fundraising public day sails focused on local wildlife and ocean conservation. All proceeds from these activities support experiential learning programming.

Mystic Whaler is deeply committed to providing quality educational experiences. Our full-time Education Manager ensures that our programs meet local and state standards of education, are relevant to the communities they serve, and provide enlightening and fun experiential learning opportunities.

Accountability

Mystic Whaler is committed to transparency and accountability in all aspects of our organization. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics and strive to continuously improve our programs and operations.

Mystic Whaler is a Coast Guard Inspected Vessel which means she carries a Certificate of Inspection (under Subchapter T) and has been inspected and approved by an inspector. The certificate includes details about the vessel such as: its equipment, the route the vessel may travel, the minimum manning requirements, the number of passengers that may be on board, the names of the owners and operators, and the period of validity.

 

All of Mystic Whaler's crew and staff are subject to random drug testing and are fingerprinted through LiveScan.
